Waiting for the Canal...

Here we are at 6 am waiting our turn to enter the Panama Canal, This was the view I awoke to; other ships and freighters on all sides and vague shapes of hills and islands in the distance. There are a variety of birds flying in two's,( boobies I think) and flocks of smaller ones flying low over the water.

As I sit here looking out through the balcony doors we seem to have come to a stop. The sun is rising fast, the sky clearing and it promises to be hot and sunny for our passage. Two members of The Persians cast have asked to watch from our balcony as we go through the first lock. Alicia and Amanda will be here between 8.30 and 9am. We shall have to tidy up as we are in the midst of packing....we are sending 3 boxes ahead by UPS on the 6th to avoid having to cart stuff on to the plane. The boxes are packed and all items listed but they do clutter up our cabin. Wait till we really get started and the suitcases appear! George has gone to fetch us early cups of tea...it is just after 6.30 am.

He has just returned and reported that students have spent the night on deck...they don't want to miss a thing! He has just wandered on to the balcony and seen a frigate bird, cormorants and lots of brown pelicans. Panama is a bird watcher's paradise.

Linda has just dropped off our last bag of laundry plus pressed shirts and slacks.....oh dear, home was never like this!! We have been sooo spoiled. I have a large hot mug of Lapsang Suchong tea to drink....friends will remember the strong scent and be glad not to be near me! They will start serving breakfast at 7 am so am off to have a shower and then a bowl of delicious paw paw or papya, (picked up in Guatemala and a wonderful deep pink colour) hot croissants and lots more tea and conversation sitting out on the front 6th floor deck as we eat. Quel vie!
